Don’t Let Car Troubles Spoil Your Holidays

The holidays are on the horizon, so now is the perfect time to make sure your vehicle is ready for winter travel. You don’t want car troubles to spoil your holidays!

At Brawley Tire & Automotive, the Lake Norman auto repair experts, we recommend following these tips from the experts at the nonprofit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) to help you make sure you are ready for the wintery weather that’s coming.

Most Important
Read your owner’s manual and follow the manufacturers recommended service schedules.

Engine Performance
Get engine driveability problems (hard starts, rough idling, stalling, diminished power, etc.) corrected right away.  Cold weather makes these problems worse. Replace dirty filters air, fuel, PCV, etc.

Fuel
Put a bottle of fuel deicer in your tank once a month to help keep moisture from freezing in the fuel line. Note, too, that a gas tank that’s kept filled helps prevent moisture from forming.

Oil
Change your oil and oil filter as specified in your manual more often (every 3,000 miles or so) if your driving is mostly stop-and-go or consists of frequent short trips.

Cooling System
The cooling system should be flushed and refilled as recommended.

Heater/Defroster
The heater and defroster must be in good working condition for passenger comfort and driver visibility.

Windshield Wipers
Replace old blades. If your climate is harsh, purchase rubberclad (winter) blades to fight ice buildup. Stock up on windshield washer solvent you’ll be surprised how much you use. Carry an ice-scraper.

Battery
Bring your car in to have your battery checked by professional equipment. Routine care:  Scrape away corrosion from posts and cable connections; clean all surfaces; tighten all connections. If battery caps are removable, check fluid level monthly.

Lights
Have all lights and bulbs inspected and be sure to replace burned out bulbs, and clean road grime from all lenses.

Exhaust System
Have your exhaust system examined for leaks. The trunk and floorboards should also be inspected for small holes, as exhaust fumes can be deadly.

Tires
Have your tires checked to make sure there’s plenty of tread life left in them, and check for uneven wearing. Check tire pressure once a month, and rotate as recommended. Don’t forget your spare, and be sure the jack is in good condition.

Emergencies
Don’t forget to pack gloves, boots, blankets, flares, a small shovel, sand or kitty litter, tire chains, a flashlight, and a cell phone. It’s always a good idea to keep a few snacks in your glove box too!

Happy Travels!
