For today’s car owner, auto repair is more complicated than ever. Vehicles keep getting more complex, as do the technology and diagnostic tools. As a result, finding a competent, knowledgeable auto repair shop can be a real challenge.
That’s where ASE comes in to play. ASE is short for the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. This non-profit organization has been around since 1972, testing and certifying automotive technicians and repair shops. Their mission has been to help improve the quality of vehicle repair and service – taking the guesswork out of finding a competent auto technician.
How does it work?
In addition to passing the ASE Certification tests, automotive technicians must have two years of on the job training or one year of on the job training and a two-year degree in automotive repair.
The tests aren’t easy. Only two out of every three test-takers pass on their first attempt. To remain ASE certified, technicians must retest every 5 years to keep up with the always-changing advances in automotive technology.
