Engine Oil Update

Choosing the right engine oil can be overwhelming. There’s conventional, synthetic, and then numerous other options in between.  Let’s start with the basics. The first thing you want to do is find the starburst symbol on the packaging. This guarantees that the oil has been tested and meets the standards of the American Petroleum Institute (API). Then, you want to search for the service standard “SL” on the container, which is essentially a number of laboratory and engine tests, ensuring the oil is up-to-date. Your next step is to choose the viscosity (thickness) that is the best for the temperatures your vehicle normally operates in.  It’s also very important to check your owner’s manual.

Motor oil can be broken into four basic varieties– synthetic oil, synthetic blends, high mileage oil, and conventional oil.

Synthetic oil is designed for high-tech engines and has gone through a chemically engineered process.  This oil has a superior, longer-lasting performance. It flows better at low temperatures and maintains excellent lubricity at high temperatures.  These oils can be very expensive.

Synthetic blend oil is made to provide protection for somewhat heavier loads and high temperatures.  It also evaporates less, which reduces oil loss and increases fuel economy.  It is mostly popular with drivers of pickup trucks and SUVs.  This oil is also a lot less expensive than full synthetic.

Higher Mileage Oil is formulated for higher-mileage vehicles, essentially vehicles with over 75,000 miles or late model vehicles.  This oil helps to reduce oil burn-off, and prevents oil leaks that may occur in older engines.

Conventional Oil is standard for most vehicles and is formulated with additives to ensure that it has proper temperature tolerance, breakdown resistance, and viscosity.

In the end, it is best to check the owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s recommendations.  Whether you are driving a Mercedes, BMW, Toyota, Ford or Chevrolet, if you have any other questions, be sure to head over to Brawley Tire and Automotive in Mooresville.
